Nerves transmit pain information from the abdominal and pelvic organs at a specialized nerve bundle called a plexus.
This plexus can be blocked so that nerve impulses are stopped from reaching the spinal cord and therefore the brain.
For chronic pain disorders involving the abdominal or pelvic organs, nerve plexus blocks (celiac and hypogastric, respectively) can provide an additional effective tool to reduce severe pain and "break the pain cycle".
Neurolytic blocks for cancer pain
In patients with metastatic cancer affecting the abdominal and/or pelvic organs or cavities, these blocks can be extended to destroy pain information definitively. Because these blocks destroy the nerve bundles, they are called neurolytic blocks.
